North Louisiana's K-12 school districts provide top quality education, with some of the best schools in the state and in the nation. Louisiana school officials have made a concerted effort to reform and improve the quality of education for our students. That's why the state has become a leader in educational accountability and reform.
North Louisiana Primary & Secondary Education
North Louisiana is home to some of the best primary and secondary schools in the state and in the nation. Seven of the region's secondary schools had been named among U.S. News & World Report’s top high schools in the U.S.

Morehouse Magnet School in Bastrop, LA named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
Over the last decade, Louisiana has achieved dramatic improvements in the quality of K-12 public education, largely due to the reform and revision of policies, programs and practices. Consequently, our state is now recognized as a national leader in the education reform landscape. Education Week magazine (January 2010) named Louisiana a national leader in improving teacher quality, standards and accountability.
Louisiana’s School Accountability System calls for continuous improvement in student achievement, attendance, and dropout rates. This system is based upon two principles: rewarding schools that grow academically and assisting schools and students who need help. Each year, schools must show improvement in the School Performance Scores (SPS) by meeting a growth target. Growth targets represent the amount of progress a school must make every year to reach the state’s SPS goal of 120 by the year 2014.
As a result, Louisiana’s five-year ACT (American College Test) composite score improvement trend outpaced the national trend. Since 2003, Louisiana’s average composite score has risen 0.5 points, while the national average has risen by 0.4 points. The average ACT scores for the state and the 14-parish region are 20.2, while the national average for the ACT is 21.1.
