Haughton Environmental (HE) today (October 1, 2019) celebrated the grand opening of its new $4.5 million, state-of-the-art water treatment and transportation services center in the Bossier Parish Town of Haughton. CEO and Partner, Clark Burton, state and local officials, business leaders and North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) cut the ribbon on the 16,000 plus square foot facility, located off Interstate 20 and Exit 33 on LA Highway 3227. HE offers the only water treatment process of its kind in North Louisiana. The company has the capacity to treat 200 gallons of wastewater per minute from its tank cleaning operations as well as wastewater from other companies.
“We are very excited to develop a first-of-its-kind transportation center in North Louisiana that serves our growing customer base while creating good-paying jobs, new tax revenue and economic development for the Town of Haughton and Bossier Parish,” said Clark Burton, Haughton Environmental CEO/Partner. “HE spared no expense in building a high-quality facility, utilizing the best available cleaning and wastewater treatment equipment on the market. Award-winning firm, Blue Sphere Water Technology, designed this state-of-the-art facility with cutting-edge process equipment. Fabrication of all cleaning vats and WWT assets was performed by Smart Welding and Fabrication. I would like to thank these vendors, the rest of the project team, the Town of Haughton and North Louisiana Economic Partnership for helping HE make this vision a reality. We have built the finest tanker cleaning/water treatment facility in the United States in Haughton, LA.”
Haughton Environmental will create 15 new direct jobs with an average wage of $15 - $25 per hour and an annual salary of $50,000 - $70,000 for management positions. Burton relocated Haughton Environmental, formerly Duckwater Services, from El Dorado, Arkansas to North Louisiana with assistance from NLEP.
Haughton Environmental’s relocation to North Louisiana had a multiplier effect across the region. The company’s move also prompted its vendor company, Blue Sphere Water Technology, to relocate from the Charlotte, NC Metro Area to the rural Sabine Parish Town of Many, LA, creating another 12 new jobs in North Louisiana. HE is also negotiating with other companies to open a location at its Haughton facility, potentially adding more jobs to the economy in the future.
“Haughton is one of the fastest growing areas of our state,” said Senator Ryan Gatti, R-Bossier City. “Haughton continues to grow because of great schools, great leadership and great citizens. Haughton Environmental is a first class company that will create good paying jobs. We are excited they chose Haughton and look forward to a great relationship.”
“I have resided in the Haughton area of Bossier Parish for over 43 years and to witness the type of growth we are experiencing is so exciting,” said Representative Dodi Horton, R-Haughton. “It is equally thrilling to have an excellent company like Haughton Environmental choose our community to relocate. The $4.5 million dollar investment further testifies of the exceptional people, public safety and skilled workforce needed to ensure HE’s success. Welcome to God’s country.”
Haughton Environmental’s state-of-the-art, onsite treatment plant utilizes cutting-edge technology to treat the waste streams from other companies as well as the discharge from its tank cleaning operation. Before sending the treated sewage to the Town of Haughton, HE stores and treats the wastewater in four onsite tanks with a total capacity of 612,000 gallons of above ground storage. Its operations will generate new revenue for the Town of Haughton in wastewater charges and discharge fees. To support Haughton Environmental, Haughton upgraded its wastewater infrastructure and developed a new wastewater fee schedule.
“I am thrilled to finally see Haughton Environmental opening for business,” said Mayor Jack Hicks, Town of Haughton. “Working with Clark and his dedicated staff through the construction process has been a pleasure, and I have no doubt that they will have much success. I am grateful that they chose the Town of Haughton as their new home and look forward to working with them for many years to come!”
HE’s relocation to North Louisiana fills a niche which was previously unserved and was prompted by their clients’ demand for HE services throughout South Arkansas and North Louisiana. The company evaluated numerous sites and communities in North Louisiana, looking for a strategic location off Interstate 20 and a great business climate. The company broke ground on its Haughton site on April 1, 2018.
“The Bossier Parish Police Jury is excited to welcome Haughton Environmental to Bossier Parish and the Town of Haughton,” said Police Juror Bob Brotherton, Bossier Parish Police Jury. “We know that you and the Town will have a rewarding economic partnership.”
NLEP worked with HE for nearly nine months to identify and explore numerous sites in several parishes and facilitated meetings with local economic development partners, regulatory agencies, and political leadership. The economic development project included significant milestones, such as the construction of an access road for 18-wheelers off LA Highway 3227 and a zoning change for the site from commercial to industrial.
“NLEP worked alongside Haughton Environmental each step of the way, helping to build a team to support the company’s relocation plan,” said President Scott Martinez, North Louisiana Economic Partnership. “The economic impact of this project for Haughton is big, and it further positions this small town for growth.”
