NLEP InterNET Connects Students to Internships

SHREVEPORT-MONROE, La. — As college students begin their search for their Spring internships, North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP), an Accredited Regional Economic Development Organization, has launched an internship database called “The interNET.” The online database allows students to search for internships offered by companies from across North Louisiana.  The database is hosted on NLEP’s website, nlep.org, under the Top Workforce section. The InterNET offers employers an easy way to promote their internships and gives students a central source to find quality internships from across North Louisiana- all at no cost.

“College and universities are increasingly requiring students to complete an internship in their chosen profession,” said Angie White, CEcD, Senior Vice President of NLEP’s Top Skills Workforce program. “We frequently hear of challenges local companies face finding candidates with the skills and training needed to fill open positions.  Developing relationships with potential employees through internships is a great way to groom them to become your future star employees.  It’s a win-win for students and employers.”

Promoting regional internships and encouraging more companies to offer them strengthen the region’s workforce pipeline and keep our talent local. The economic future of North Louisiana depends on existing employers finding the talent they need to remain competitive and to grow. Having a robust, skilled workforce also attracts new employers in critical industries like information technology, professional services, manufacturing, and health care. Among regional college students, there is a lack of awareness of companies offering quality career opportunities, and internships are an excellent way to grow their awareness.

“One of NLEP’s three main goals is to develop our workforce pipeline and talent recruitment and retention efforts in North Louisiana,” said Scott Martinez, CEcD, NLEP President. “Internships build up the skill and experience levels in our workforce which makes our region more attractive to companies looking for a place to expand or locate a new operation. A vibrant internship culture is something we can use as a marketing tool.”

The interNET was developed with funding support from the Community Foundation of North Louisiana.  The Community Foundation awarded NLEP a grant in 2015 to support the implementation of elements of its Top Skills Workforce Program that were recommended in its five-year strategic plan to better align industry and education in North Louisiana.

To find an internship, visit www.nlep.org/internet and search by company or category of internship or view all the internships.  Employers can visit www.nlep.org/internet and click the “Submit Your Internship” button and fill out the online submission form.  It’s quick, easy and free. For more information on how to post a job at NLEP’s interNET, contact Angie White at 318.677.2559 or email her at awhite@nlep.org.
