Named for the river that runs through Red River Parish, the economy of this parish until recently relied primary on agriculture, timber and forestry. However, the discovery of the Haynesville Shale in northwest Louisiana has injected millions into the local economy. Energy companies are setting up shop and drilling in Red River Parish.
In 2010, ADA Carbon Solutions and Energy Capital Partners built a $350 million activated carbon manufacturing plant in Red River Parish near Coushatta, La.- the largest, most-automated carbon plant in North America. The plant processes lignite mined at nearby Five Forks Mine into activated carbon, which is processed and shipped from a rail and logistics facility in Campti, La., near Natchitoches. The company employs 65 people with salaries in the range of $50,000-$65,000. The company also produced an estimated 299 new indirect jobs.
Located in northwest Louisiana, Red River Parish covers 389 sq. miles and is divided by the Red River, defining two distinct sections: the rich river bottomlands on the west and the pine & oak uplands on the east. With convenient access to Interstate-49 and the Red River, the parish supports an estimated 2019 population of 8,399 residents and a civilian labor force of 3,791 who earns an median household income of $37,744.
