North Louisiana residents enjoy a low cost of living, low housing costs and low unemployment rates which allow for a high standard of living. Both the Monroe-West Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Shreveport-Bossier City MSA deliver a cost of living below the national average. Monroe and Shreveport rank as one of the most affordable places to live in the state. Shreveport-Bossier City residents enjoy a
cost of living that's only 91.9 percent of the national average, according to the Cost of Living Index for the second quarter of 2020. The cost of living in the Monroe MSA was
88.5 percent of the national average (COLI, Q1 2020).
The Cost of Living Index, compiled by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), is based on more than 90,000 prices collected during the same period of time by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and universities in participating urban areas across the United States. NLEP gathers the pricing information for the Shreveport-Bossier MSA, and the ULM Center for Business and Economic Research gathers the data for the Monroe MSA.
